Hijra is the name given to a group of people on the Indian subcontinent who are considered neither male or female, but rather as part of a third sex. These were photographed as they went around soliciting money from families with babies and builders of new buildings. When they are given money, they bless the baby or building and may sing, dance, play music or perform a ritual. But if they are refused there is the idea that they have the power to curse.
Photographed in Dhaka, Bangladesh 2012
